Seeing Pantone…

Interesting story mailed around by LinkedIn today about a stained glass window made from Pantone swatches.

Now – it isn’t exactly what I was thinking. Clearly someone has taken ‘photos’ – in this case slides – of the relevant swatches and put the slides in the form of a window. Neat idea of a format.

Well worth banking the idea for use in another way than simple colours!

Painting Flowers

Another story in today’s Mail about Jack Long who has been creating flowers from freeze-frame photographs of paint splashes.

These are amazing – for many reasons – their technical challenges, the original concept and the final result. Plus, many of these splashes remind me of carnivorous plants. Particularly the Sundews.

Marvel and enjoy…

Kirtsy Mitchell Photography

Story in today’s Mail about a fabulous photographer – Kirsty Mitchell – whose photographs are just gorgeous.

How would you define these? She makes the costumes and does the staging and photography. They are so theatrical, yet stand alone and also quite ‘open’ for questioning. I adore these. They are so intricate and natural, ethereal and dream-like, yet so real.

Simply stunning.

Vaulting high

Lovely story in today’s Mail about the vaulted ceilings of cathedrals around the world. I have long had an ecclesiastical fascination since I was a teenager and went into churches and a monastery in Romania and discovered they were ‘inside out’. All the decoration was on the inside, lots of paint for decoration, but plain architecture and windows – whereas all I had seen before was ornate architecture, plain stone and colourful windows. Ever since, I have been intrigued about how places of worship are represented by different religions and regions across the world.

I have been to many of the ones below…

I’ve been to York, Ely, Sainte-Chapelle, Chatres, Lincoln and Cologne. I’ve also been to Belem (but think I went to the tower across the road and not the monastery) and Barcelona – but not sure I have been in this cathedral, but lots of others. That just leaves Gdansk and Laon in France to complete the set!

Finally got round to finishing my little fox from the Jenny Barnett workshop.

I loved making him. He’s so cute!

Olympic Landscapes

A story in today’s Mail about photographer Michael Hallett who has taken a range of photos along the south coast – focussing on the areas the Olympics will take place.

What is most interesting is the comments people have left about his work. They are all very derisory and centre on the fact that this has been done many times before. Yes, it has… Hockney did this decades before – however, what Hallett is doing is taking a technique, genre even, and making it relevant to today. They also go on about how easy it is to do in Photoshop or with an App these days – but I don’t see them doing it! A lot of art is ‘swiped’ at in that fashion these days – ‘I could do that’ – but the point is ‘you’ didn’t and someone else did.

What I really like about these images is that they ARE ‘old school’. They aren’t uniform in shape and the feel like the way your eye flits around a landscape. They bear the nuances of colour that only individual exposures provide and we are so used to seeing images that have been manipulated to within an inch of their lives to uniformity of colour that these make a refreshing change.

Perilous Landscapes

I know the link is a little tenuous, but another fab photo story in the Mail about the Sony World Photography Awards. This time about landscapes in peril from the weather.

Gorgeous pics!

Jellyfish

YouTube really sucks you in! Here is a video on jellyfish. I have a deep fascination with them after I saw a large tank of Moon jellyfish in an aquarium many years ago. They were mesmerizing. Their pulsing forms, grace, effortless movement, how they seemed totally harmless. But obviously they (literally) have a sting in their tails and some are even lethal to man.

Prepare to be hypnotised…

Shapeshifting Octopus

In today’s Mail there is a story about artificial muscle and a shapeshifting octopus.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sciencetech/article-2138497/British-scientists-create-artificial-muscles-copy-squids-ability-instantly-change-colour.html

I am most impressed by the octopus. Peril and camouflage seem to go hand in hand in nature. A really interesting twist…

The story also includes a video of artificial muscle. I find this fascinating – from its starkness and animative qualities. And the fact that this could easily be seen as a piece of art. Is Damien Hirst actually pushing an influence? I think not. I think I would have seen it this way before I saw his exhibition….
